Questions & answers
Before you apply.
What to expect from volunteering with the Digital Media Lab.
What is the Digital Media Lab?
The Digital Media Lab is a volunteer program of Human Factors Cast Foundation focused on science communication. We turn research about people and systems into accessible podcasts, videos, articles, and public resources.
Who can apply?
We welcome people from all backgrounds, including those new to human factors or science communication. Students, practitioners, career changers, and people with research, media, writing, design, or coding interests can all apply.
Do I need a human factors degree?
No. Tell us what interests you, what skills you bring, and what you want to learn. You can develop your understanding of the field while contributing to shared projects.
Is the lab remote?
Yes. We collaborate remotely. Share your timezone and availability so we can discuss project work and communication touchpoints that fit.
Is this a paid role?
The application on this site is for volunteering. It does not offer employment or promise compensation.
How much time should I offer?
There is no fixed weekly minimum. Commitments depend on the project and your availability. Choose what you can realistically offer, and discuss changes with your teammates early.
Do I need to attend every meeting?
We agree on regular communication touchpoints as part of your project. Participate in check-ins when you can, or share a written update when you can’t attend. Keep teammates informed even when your progress is slow.
What support will I receive?
Members can receive mentorship, feedback, and guidance from experienced contributors. Bring questions, ask for help when you’re stuck, and use feedback to develop your work. Projects also involve initiative and independent work.
Can I build my portfolio and receive credit?
Yes. Members receive credit for their contributions and opportunities to use published work in their portfolios. The form of credit and the material you can share depend on your contribution and the project.
Can lab members get conference admission?
Members assigned to approved lab conference coverage may qualify for reduced or complimentary press admission. Each organizer decides eligibility and approval, and availability varies. Discuss the coverage assignment and access arrangements with the lab before planning attendance.
Can I propose my own project?
Yes. Tell us how your idea could help people understand human factors. Include it in the application’s goals field or discuss it with the lab after joining.
What happens after I apply?
We review your application, then have a conversation about your interests, project options, and fit. Accepted members complete onboarding before receiving access to member collaboration spaces.
Do I need a portfolio, headshot, or Discord account to apply?
A portfolio link and Discord username are optional. You don’t need a headshot, phone number, or public biography to apply. If you join, onboarding covers the collaboration tools and access you need.
What does respectful participation mean?
Keep teammates informed, give constructive feedback, credit others’ work, and respect different backgrounds and perspectives. Harassment and discrimination have no place in the lab.
How is the lab connected to the podcast and Foundation?
The lab is a Foundation program. It supports Human Factors Cast and other science communication projects, including Human Factors Minute and User Experience Points.
